Occupying the landscape and constructing territories: dispersion and diversification in the process of peopling of the Americas from a Brazilian context

Resumo: To accomplish this objective dialog with professionals at the Institute of Archaeology is an essential step since similar models have already been made and applied in other regions of America for the study of the same process. The knowledge of the methodology involved and the debate on human behavior and the formation and diversification of territories are fundamental to anchor this discussion on a solid base. In this sense, my permanence in the Institute has as its main goal an alignment of this dialogue to the sharing of solid theoretical starting point. In practical terms, we intend to bring new data to be analyzed according to appropriate and already applied methods (Steele et al 1995, 1998) for the construction of models about peopling and dispersion of human groups in different regions and periods. The aim of this proposal is to discuss the process of the peopling of the Americas using two sets of related data: a bibliographical review of Brazilian archaeology and case studies from two areas in central Brazil. Despite its great potential this issue is still poorly explored. Attempting to fill this gap, this research was developed as a contribution to the study of population dispersals within Brazil and the decision making involved in the settlement of new territories.
